Summer ROCKS – Youth

An eight-week, no-cost, in-person, drop-in program offered to Youth (ages 13–18). Activities range from academic, recreational, and social activities in a safe, supportive space. It includes mentorship, post-secondary exploration, job readiness (resumes, interviews), and financial literacy workshops. Activities will also include gardening, nature exploration, and intercultural and intergenerational experiences.

Role Description

Under the supervision and guidance of the Riverbend ROCKS Coordinator-Children and Youth Programming, Youth Development Lead will take a leadership role in developing and co-leading an 8-week no-cost summer program for children aged 13 to 18 years old. Responsibilities and tasks will include:

  • Curate a diverse range of educational and recreational activities tailored to culturally diverse youth aged 13 to 18.
  • Plan, execute and report on activities: sports, educational, environmental, recreational, visual, and performing arts (e.g. Free Play for Kids, Terwillegar Rec Centre, Edmonton Public Library).
  • Organize events connecting youth with relevant organizations to ease transitions to post-secondary education (e.g., Norquest, Metro Education, University of Alberta tours).
  • Assist the leads in mentoring youth on employment prospects, community involvement, volunteering, and addressing family and social challenges.
  • Support newcomers, marginalized, and vulnerable youth in navigating the Canadian education system, focusing on transitional points (e.g., moving from junior high to high school).
  • Foster self-confi dence, community belonging, and resilience by addressing expressed challenges and incorporating them into program activities.
  • Leverage community resources and learning opportunities.
